Gen Prawit: Election definitely being held in Feb 2019

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prawit  Wongsuwan this morning (May 31, 2018) confirmed that election will be held in February 2019 now that the Constitutional Court has ruled the organic bill on the election of MPs as passed by the National Legislative Assembly is legal, Thai News Agency reported.

Asked if the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) is now relieved that everything has reached this point, Gen Prawit said he is happy NCPO’s duties will soon be ending because everything is moving according to the road map, and he does want an orderly election.

Asked whether the 150-day time-frame to organize an election after the promulgation of essential organic laws will be shortened to 90 days to meet the February deadline, Gen Prawit replied that there would be no adjustment because everything has to move according to the law, and all agencies are working hard to meet the deadline.

He added that there would probably be no need to use a Section 44 order to make any adjustment.

The deputy prime minister added that talks between the government and political parties should take place next month.

While some parties have refused to hold discussions with the government, Gen Prawit said the government would hold talks with those that are willing to do so.
