Gen Prawit: Uncertain ex-monk will return tomorrow

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan said this morning (June 5, 2018) that it is uncertain the police team now in Frankfurt would be able to bring fugitive former Phra Phrom Methee back to Thailand tomorrow, INN News reported.

National Police Chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda and several other senior police officers are currently in Frankfurt to escort the fugitive monk, formerly assistant abbot of Wat Samphanthawong and whose layman name is Chamnong Iamintra, back to Thailand to face charges of embezzling temple funds.

The former monk fled last week by first crossing the border to Laos, then going to Cambodia, after that Vietnam from where he caught a flight to Germany with a stopover in Doha, Qatar. There he failed to pass German immigration procedure and has been held by German authorities since then.

However, this morning Gen Prawit said briefly that the Thai team have not met the former monk and cannot meet him because they have not been allowed to do so.

It is therefore uncertain that the former monk will return to Thailand tomorrow morning as earlier planned.
