‘Godfather of Chon Buri’ released from jail

Mr Somchai Khunpluem, widely known as the ‘Godfather of Chon Buri Province,’ has been quietly released from jail, triggering speculation about his future role in Thai politics, Sanook.com reported today (Jan. 17, 2018).

The Supreme Court in 2009 sentenced Mr Somchai to 25 years in jail for corruption and hiring a gunman to kill his political opponent. The court also seized his assets worth 10 million baht.

During his heyday, Mr Somchai, whose nickname is Kamnan Poh, was the financial backer of several political parties. His early release triggered speculation that a powerful figure might have helped him gain early freedom in return for Mr Somchai’s support for his victory in the next general election.
