Love across the canal ends in tragedy

A WOMAN very much in love with her boyfriend decided to swim across the canal to meet him but got tired and tragically drowned, Amarin TV said today (Feb. 16).

This morning police at Klong Dan station, Bang Bo district, Samut Prakan, were alerted of a woman’s body seen floating in Klong Dan canal, opposite Khlong Dan Health Centre, with a team quickly going there to investigate accompanied by Por Tek Tung Foundation rescuers and a doctor from at Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital.

At the scene they found the body of the woman, later identified as Ms. Nichasanan (surname withheld), 58, floating face down in the approximately 80-to 100-metre wide canal wearing a pair of pants, a T-shirt and a shirt. There were no signs of physical assault and it was estimated that she had been dead for around 12 hours.

Mr. Nikhom Thongtem, 68, a civil defence volunteer, told police that at around 10.30 p.m. last night he ran into this same woman at the pier opposite Wat Mongkol Kothawas temple. She appeared drunk as she told him that she was going to swim across the canal to meet her boyfriend who lives on the other bank.

He told her not to do that and helped her out of the water but this morning he heard of a woman having drowned at this canal and it turned out it was the same person he saved last night. It appears that around half an hour later, at 11 p.m., she returned and jumped into the canal to swim across but got tired and drowned.

Mr. Ek, 38, the owner of a grocery store, said in the past this woman used to come and drink in front of his shop and often rowed her boat to get to the other side of the canal and he had frequently helped her. However, of late she moved to drink in front of the temple and it shocked him to find out that she had drowned.
