Mahout’s death moves elephant to tears

PEOPLE attending the funeral of an 84-year-old mahout in the southern Thai province of Surat Thani were surprised when his elephant broke free from a wooden pole and prostrated itself in front of his coffin, Sanook.com reported today (August 2).

The incident took place on the first day of religious rites (August 1) when the mahout’s son came to see the elephant and saw tears in his eyes.

After he walked back to the room where his father’s body was kept, the elephant broke free and prostrated itself in front of the coffin. “I told him that daddy is dead and I believed he understood,” said the son.
