New Year travel begins, 7.3 Million vehicles on the road.

New Year travel begins as people travel back home for the celebration. Officials estimate that about 7.3 Million vehicles will be on the road traveling. There are plans for safety control during countdown events. Police General Damrongsak Kittiprapat opened a new 2023 traffic protection center that will help organize traffic control and safety during the 7 days of danger on 28 December 2022. The 7 days of danger will take place from 29 December 2022 to 4 January 2023. The name comes from heavy traffic during the 7 days traveling to and from home provinces. Most will leave on the 29th or 30th and return on the 3rd or 4th.

Police will help take care and provide convenience to road users. The main goal is to reduce the amount of road accidents that take place during this time. In the past police have been able to reduce accident rates. This is done by using the law but also with the cooperation of road users who follow rules such as not driving under the influence. Big trucks must have special permission or use designated routes during the 7 days of danger. This includes the M6 route called the Esan motorway from Bang Pa-In to Nakhon Ratchasima. There will be at least 7.3 Million vehicles traveling during this time.

With increased vehicles means increased accident rates. Over 50,000 officers will be working during this time on the road. This number does not include other officers that will be working on security in countdown events. These events have strict security to protect against conflict that often takes place in parties and large gatherings. Police want to protect against any harm including loss of personal belongings. There will be checkpoints to make sure there are no weapons that can be used to cause harm.
