TWO Buddhist novices in the southern Thai province of Chumphon face expulsion after they were caught on CCTV stealing a mobile phone from a grocery store, the Thai-language Daily News reported today (March 18).
According to the newspaper, the novices entered the shop on Saturday afternoon and one of them snatched a mobile phone on the table before leaving.
Booncherd Kittitarangkoon, director of the Ecclesiastical Council of Thailand, said the young monks face both expulsion and criminal charges.
Under the Thai Ecclesiastical Law, Buddhist monks may seek donations if they get permission from the Interior Minister or the provincial governor.
