PRIME Minister Prayut flew to Nepal today (August 30, 2018) on an Air Force aircraft to join the 4th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) summit taking place today and tomorrow, Thai News Agency reported.
Gen Prayut will also be holding bilateral talks with Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Issues to be raised at the conference fall under the concept “Towards a peaceful, secure and sustainable region of the Bay of Bengal.”
Gen Prayut, in presenting his vision at the summit, will call for cooperation and links among the Bimstec nations being further promoted with this covering both land and sea and the sphere of trade and investment. He will also be signing 3 agreements.
According to Indiatvnews.com, Bimstec came into existence on June 6, 1997, through the Bangkok Declaration.
It comprises 7 countries lying in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The bloc brings together 1.5 billion people, or 21 per cent of the world’s population, and has a combined GDP of $2.5 trillion.
The main objective of Bimstec is technical and economic cooperation among South Asian and Southeast Asian countries along the rim of the Bay of Bengal.
