Police questioning Premchai, will deny bail

WHILE Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Siwara Rangsiprammanakul is today (March 14) questioning Italian-Thai Development Plc President Premchai  Karnasuta after he was informed of 3 additional charges stemming from his arrest for hunting protected wildlife early last month, he does not expect to get any useful information from him, INN News reported.

This is because what suspects say usually does not hold up, he said, but confidently adding that police have enough evidence against the suspect.

Police are also going to deny Premchai bail and send him to the Criminal Court on Ratchadapisek Road. However he could appeal to the court for bail.

The 3 charges which Premchai heard today are illegal possession of firearms, possessing ivory tusks without permission and attempted bribery.

Yesterday police recommended to the public prosecutor that Premchai and his 3 companions be arraigned on 9 charges arising from their arrest for hunting protected wildlife at Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in Kanchanaburi province early last month.

Pol Gen Siwara explained that some of the charges are perplexing because the same wrongdoing violates many laws.

An example is the musket found in Premchai’s house, if this is found to be an historical object then additional charges could be filed.

Likewise the African ivory tusks found in the suspect’s house could come under smuggling category and talks would be held with CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) as to whether holding them breaks any agreement.

Police have postponed questioning Premchai’s wife Mrs Kanita Karnasuta and Mrs Wandee Somphum for holding the ivory tusks but will call them in again in a week’s time.
