Public told Thai dams are strong

THE Royal Irrigation Department today (July 26, 2018) came out to reassure the public that Thai dams and reservoirs are strong and are regularly inspected after a dam collapsed in Laos earlier this week, Thai News Agency reported.

The department’s Director-General Thongplaew Kongchan said all dams and reservoirs are well taken care of with equipment installed at all points of big dams to monitor any movement and checks made whether water discharge is at a normal level.

The department has a special section to regularly check dams with this being more frequent during rainy season and special inspection made should there be an earthquake in neighboring countries.

Meanwhile His Majesty the King sent relief supplies to help Laotian flood victims in Attapeu and Champasak provinces which are heavily flooded through torrential rain and the collapse of Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy dam on Tuesday.

The Army is flying 10,000 bottles of drinking, 2,000 towels, 49 water filters plus food and medicine to Laos today.
