Public urged to use water sparingly

HELPING make this Songkran more enjoyable is the Royal Irrigation Department which has set up 126 service points for travelers and while confirming there is enough water to use during this festival also urge the public to use it sparingly, Thai News Agency said today (April 12).

Sanchai Ketvorachai, the department’s chief, said Agriculture Minister Chatchai Salikulya was concerned about so many people traveling during Songkran and told all the ministry’s agencies to arrange public service centers.

The Royal Irrigation Department has therefore set up 126 such centers at its offices and projects near key roads nationwide where those driving could stop and rest with this perhaps helping reduce accidents.

The department’s officials are on hand to welcome visitors and suitable food and drinks are served with there being clean rest rooms to use. At some centers cheap agricultural goods such as rice and fruit and various processed agricultural products are on sale.

While confirming that there will be enough water to use during Songkran Mr Sanchai nevertheless urged the public to use water sparingly because while no drought has been announced in the country’s irrigated areas this year, a total of 105 districts in 34 provinces are being watched for water shortage.
