CHIANG Mai University students, academics and some residents of this northern province held a 45-minute peaceful rally at the campus last evening calling on the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to hold an election quickly, the Thai-language daily Matichon reported today (Feb. 15).
The rally, attended by around a hundred people, was watched over by policemen in plain clothes while uniformed policemen from Phu Ping Ratchaniwet station had set up a checkpoint on Huay Kaew road leading to the university to prevent ill-intentioned people from triggering an incident.
The Liberal Assembly of Chiang Mai University for Democracy (LACMUD) also issued an statement calling on the government of Prime Minister Prayut to announce its intention on holding an election, with the statement saying that this has been postponed till yearend 2019 from early 2018 as earlier fixed.
The statement also called for liberty, particularly academic rights and freedom of expression.
