AN elephant that escaped from its camp and strolled down a road in Phuket led to people panicking but fortunately a mahout later safely took the jumbo back to its home after damaging one vehicle with no one being injured, Amarin TV said today (Jan. 23).
Pol. Lt. Kittipong Nupheng, an investigation officer at Cherng Talay police station, got an urgent phone call from a worried road user that an elephant was walking down the road from Cherng Talay Soi 3 to Cherng Talay Witthayakhom School with a metal frame attached to its neck.
A police team quickly went to the scene and found that the jumbo had damaged a car window which was hit by the metal frame tied around its neck but no one was injured.
The jumbo, from Elephant Care Park at Cherng Talay Soi 3, later entered the school compound with the mahout and other personnel told to call a veterinarian to administer tranquilizers or take appropriate action because the animal was in a state of shock and no one could get close to it.
However a little while later the jumbo left the school and walked to a nearby small canal from where the mahout successfully took him back to the camp.
Mr. Natthaphong Chuphak, 30, manager of the elephant camp, said the jumbo had escaped after being startled by the sound of a car horn.
