Police and volunteers will be deployed to ensure safety for local and foreign tourists during the annual Yi Peng Festival in the northern Thai tourist city of Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai News reported yesterday (Nov 6, 2018).
Local and foreign tourists will be allowed to float lanterns from 7 p.m. on November 22 to 1.00 a.m. on November 23. They must seek permission from district officers 15 days before the start of the festival.
Provincial officials will co-ordinate with Chiang Mai Airport staff to ensure that no one breaks the rule. Violators face three years in jail and a 10,000 baht fine.
Traffic police will be deployed to stop drunk drivers, while local officials will keep an eye on people engaged in fireworks displays.
