IN the very first shark deterrent in this country the popular Hua Hin seaside town has started installing seine nets with yellow buoys off Sai Noi beach where a shark bit a Norwegian tourist last April, the Thai-language daily Matichon reported today (Sept 21, 2018).
Mr Wan Chatri, director of the marine resources conservation unit at Prachuab Kriri Khan province’s Marine and Coastal Resources Administration Office 4, together with Hua Hin Mayor Mr Nopporn Wutikul and concerned officials observed the installation of shark prevention nets today.
These nets are being fixed 80 meters off the coast with the seawater being not more than 4 meters deep. They protect 12,000 square meters of Sai Noi beach and Khao Tao community.
This is a long-term preventive measure after the Norwegian tourist, Werner Danielsen, was bitten in his left leg and seriously injured on April 15 this year.
Hua Hin municipality is spending over 400,000 baht on this project and the installation should be completed in 5 days.
The 5-month delay in the taking action is because the municipality had to discuss the utilization of this budget with the Department of Local Administration. Moreover there are fewer sharks in these waters today.
