A SMART zebra crossing lit with embedded solar-powered lights will start working from tonight with this project aimed at reducing accidents and if successful more will be installed nationwide, Thai News Agency said today (Oct. 4).
Apichart Chanthanakorn, director of Prachuap Khiri Khan Highways Office, said the installation of 32 solar-powered lights at a zebra crossing on Phet Kasem highway in front of Chatchai market in Hua Hin town had to be halted last night because of heavy rain but now the work has been completed and the lights will shine from tonight onwards.
These yellow lights have been embedded 1.20 meters apart and can store solar energy for 12 hours. If the sky is overcast the lights will shine brightly but when there is a lot of natural light they will shut down automatically.
The solar-powered lights will last 5 years after which a new set would have to be installed.
Apichart added that both drivers and pedestrians would be able to see each from afar and it is hoped this smart zebra crossing or smart cross walk will reduce accidents.
If successful more such smart crossing lights will be installed nationwide.
