Sorry ma’am, but nuns can’t claim social welfare’

THE second day of registration for social welfare fund in the central Thai province of Ang Thong went smoothly this morning (April 3) until a group of Buddhist nuns showed up, sanook.com reported.

Under the state welfare program, each Thai family gets a lump sum of 3,000 baht each year from the government.

All went well until 10 Buddhist nuns arrived and queued up to receive the money. An official took them aside and politely explained that monks and nuns are not under the social welfare program.

The nuns refused to budge, but eventually left after the official showed them an official list of people excluded from the program.
