South again pounded by torrential rain

THE Thai Meteorological Department today (Jan. 23) issued a warning of heavy to torrential rain in the lower South during Jan. 23-25 while floodwater rose higher in Narathiwat and Trang provinces, Thai News Agency said.

The weather forecasters said that a rather strong high pressure from China covers Thailand and South China Sea while a strong northeast monsoon prevails across the Gulf and the South leading to outbreaks of heavy to torrential rain in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces until Jan. 25.

People in the South were warned of severe conditions and possible flash floods as well as landslides.

Meanwhile in Narathiwat runoffs from the hills at Sukhirin district flowed into the river at Sungai Kolok district raising floodwater higher and this affecting residents on both Thai and Malaysian sides of the border. In some areas floodwater is two meters high with the lowest level being one meter.

In Trang flooding only improved for three days and floodwater has risen higher again because of torrential rain.

Sympathizing with flood victims in the South was superstar Jackie Chan who flew to Bangkok for the gala premiere of his latest action-comedy blockbuster “Kung Fu Yoga,” New 108 free newspaper said today.

The popular star donated 1,000 relief kits to the flood victims through the Thai military with his Thai fans helping to sort and pack them.
