SIXTY elephants at the Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal in Ayuthaya were blessed and treated to a feast today as March 13 is Thai Elephant Day, Thai News Agency said.
Laithongrian Meephan, owner of the Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal urged Ayuthaya Govennor Suchin Chaichumsak who presided over the event to consider setting up an elephant theater at this province close to Bangkok while also calling on the authorities to protect the rights of elephants and their mahouts.
The abbot of Wat Pom Raman Phrakru Kasem Chanthavimon sprinkled holy water on the 60 jumbos after which they were treated to a Chinese table mixed fruit meal. This was followed by an ancient elephant battle show.
Mr Suchin said setting up an elephant theater in Ayuthaya, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site just an hour away from Bangkok, is a good idea because then the ancient city would have another attraction aside from its ancient ruins and this might entice tourists to stay longer in the province.
