Thailand moves towards elections

PRIME Minister and head of National Council for Peace and Order Prayut Chan-o-cha announced the promulgation of the new Constitution after His Majesty the  King officially endorsed it yesterday with this gearing the country towards a general election but he will continue to maintain Section 44 powers, Thai News  Agency said today (April 7).

At 8.20 p.m. yesterday Premier Prayut said in a speech broadcast on television that the new Constitution sets long-term national strategy with there being goals on developing and reforming various aspects of the country.

The Constitution Drafting Committee will be completing 10 draft organic acts within eight months and will then submit them to National Legislative Assembly to consider which has to finish doing so in two months’ time.  If any amendments are required this has to be completed within one month after that it will be presented to HM the King for signing and announced for use in 90 days.

Once the first four laws are announced the election period starts but government cannot yet clearly say when this will take place.
