Thailand will have a pretty cool New Year celebration

IF you appreciate the present morning cool weather with mythical fog, rejoice now that the Thai Meteorological Department’s increasingly accurate forecast is telling us that we should still have them, at least until after New Year.

And no, we didn’t forget about the rain. Sadly, for Bangkokians, you should still have it too but not as heavy as the lower part of the Northeast. As the current moderate high pressure still covers upper Thailand, causing cool temperature and fog in the morning, it should only get just a tad warmer during Dec. 29-30.

People should still take care of their own, their children’s and elderly’s health. Drivers and riders please still be cautious as some may not have extensive experience in road use under foggy atmosphere.

Just in time for the New Year celebration during Dec. 31, 2017 – Jan. 2, 2018, there will be another rather strong high pressure from China which will extend over the upper part of Thailand, causing 2-4°C drop in temperature.

The strong northeasterly monsoon should still dominate the Gulf and the South of Thailand, causing more rain and isolated heavy showers in the southern provinces. Upto 2-4 meters high waves with strong wind can be expected in the Gulf of Thailand.

Come Jan. 3-4, 2018 that is the time that the high pressure weakens. Rise in temperature can be expected over upper part of the country while isolated rain is still likely in the upper zone of the North. The northeasterly monsoon will get weaker, thus possibly causing less rain and weaker wind and waves all over the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

So during Dec. 31, 2017 –Jan. 2, 2018, people in the higher regions of the country should beware of cold weather. People down in the South should watch out for heavy rain and inshore surge. All ships in the Gulf of Thailand should sail with caution while small boats should stay ashore.
