Thaksin’s son-in-law in the running to helm Pheu Thai

THE Thai online world is abuzz with the news that Pheu Thai Party is searching for a member of the new generation to lead it in the next general election, and among them is former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s son-in-law Mr Nattapong Kunakornwong, Sanook.com reported today (Sept. 3, 2018).

Nattapong, who is married to Thaksin’s daughter Pinthongta, is currently the CEO of SC Asset Plc.

Party sources said Nattapong is in the running to lead this party because its leaders want someone with a good image and who is able to reach the younger generation to be at the helm.

Thaksin asked former MPs who visited him overseas whether they want a younger or a mature person to lead their party, and they said it could be either, only that the party has a leader to prepare it for the election battle.

Sources said if Nattapong becomes the party leader then the party’s image would change in many ways. For example, the party’s working and executive committees would get younger members, that is not over 50 years of age, to help with the work.

This would also ensure there is no generational gap which might pose a problem.

However Somkid Chuakong, former Pheu Thai MP for Ubon Ratchathani, said the party has not yet talked about the new party leader but they want a person who will fight along democratic lines together with  the people. It would be good if that person is an all-rounder and also good in economics.

He added that right now, as reported by the press, there are 4 to 5 person vying to lead Pheu Thai but it depends on the party who is chosen.
