Thieves target Thai banana plantations

BANANA planters in the central Thai province of Phitsanulok know how to get rid of weeds. But they are at a loss about what to do with thieves who descend on their plantations at night, the Thai-language Daily News reported today (May 12).

In an interview with the paper, 59-year-old Sabai Pairoh said it took a year to harvest the bananas in her farms. “We all work hard – watering the trees and getting rid of weeds – and they just come and take the fruits of our labor,” she said.

On average, a banana tree bears fruit worth about 120 baht. “It’s not much, but they are the fruits of our labor,” said Mrs Sabai.
