Tight security for Christmas/New Year celebrations

POLICE are stepping up security in Bangkok to ensure a hitch-free Christmas and New Year celebrations with there being over a hundred security and alcohol checkpoints and over 15,000 policemen on duty to protect celebrators, INN News reported today (Dec. 24).

Pol. Gen. Virachai Thongmetta, deputy national police chief, together with Pol. Lt. .Gen. Charnthep Saesavej, head of Metropolitan Police, and his deputy announced that security has been boosted during Christmas and New Year celebrations and prayers, with this  starting tonight and continuing for the 7 dangerous days.

There are now 27 security and 115 alcohol checkpoints in place across Bangkok manned by policemen from 88 police station.Among the areas where these checkpoints have been set up are Ratchadapisek, Rama 9, Pradiphat, Prasert-Manukitch roads, Minburi and various points where accidents are prone to occur.

Moreover there are 12 public service checkpoints across the metropolis to help people steadily traveling to the provinces starting next week.

Aside from 15,000 policemen, 5,000 volunteers are also helping maintain security.

Lots of Thais and foreigners will be joining the festivities particularly at the 5 New Year countdown zones with these  being Central World, Asiateque, Khaosan road, Thailand Illumination Festival 2017 on Ratchadaphisek Road and Crystal Design Center.

Security is especially tight at Central World because it is expected that over 100,000 tourists will be joining the countdown there. Security checks will start from noon Dec. 31, and the number of CCTVs and bright lights increased.
