OFFICIALS are searching for a group of foreign tourists who were filmed feeding monkeys at Phi Phi Island with this being against the regulations, Amarin TV said today (May 5).
After a video clip of these tourists feeding monkeys was shared online a lot of netizens criticised their action.
Most of them said it is inappropriate to do so because not only is this against the regulations it also has a lot of negative effects on the monkeys themselves. It leads to their behaviour changing and becoming more aggressive as they lose the skills to forage for their own food and instead ask or snatch food from tourists. This can lead to holidaymakers being attacked by monkeys to get their food.
Mr. Saengsuri Songthong, head of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, said the foreign tourists violated regulations as it is prohibited to feed these monkeys.
The park has investigated details of this incident, and these tourists are being tracked down for punishment according to the regulations as they had also violated the National Parks Act B.E. 2562 (2019).
Officials will step up surveillance and publicise this ban to create more awareness. Those who see any inappropriate action are urged to either notify park officials or post a message at this park’s web page.
