Violent storm destroys houses, barns in Surin

A FIERCE summer storm hit the northeastern province of Surin for over an hour last evening destroying over 10 houses and several rice barns, Thai News Agency said today (March 16).

The violent summer storm swept through Surin’s Sikhoraphum district for over an hour destroying residents’ homes with their metal roofs being blown away and rice barns storing paddy under the rice pledging scheme with the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives also damaged.

An inspection showed that in one sub-district three houses were completely destroyed while in another 10 wrecked. Moreover several rice barns were damaged with the paddy dampened with rainwater and farmers now have to wait for the sun to come out to dry their crop to prevent losses.

Some of the victims spent the night at the relatives’ homes while others pitched a tent outside their wrecked houses to guard their belongings.
