World-famous Thai beach hit by pollution

THAI villagers and hotel operators on the world-famous Lanta Island are calling on local government to immediately deal with raw sewage released into the sea by local communities, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today (March 9).

A five-kilometre-long stretch of Kantiang Canal is now blackened by raw sewage. Locals and hotel operators have to dump white cement powder into the waterways to subdue the foul smell.

A group of villagers have signed a petition calling on hotel operators and people living by the canal to install sewage treatment system.

Kantiang Beach was listed as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world by The Sunday Times of London in 2009, said Thai Rath.
