Worst drought in 10 years hits Korat

Over 50,000 rai of farmland in the northeastern Thai province of Nakhon Ratchasima (better known as Korat) has been hit by the worst drought in 10 years, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported yesterday (Jan 18, 2020).

Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Thewan Lippatapanlop said the levels of water in the reservoirs behind the four dams in Korat were very low, making it impossible for the farmers to plant rice and other crops.

The government has set aside a special budget of nearly 2,000 million baht for farmers to replant rice and other crops when the rainy season begins.
