A tourist that visited the zoo posted a short 4-second video showing the tiger at a zoo clawing a piglet, the piglet was screaming. Netizens heavily criticized the zoo mostly agreeing on how the show is not appropriate. Padej Laithong from the Sriracha Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and other related officials went to inspect the Sriracha Tiger Zoo in Chonburi Province. Matohay Jeharwae the Tiger Zoo Manager took officials through the inspection on 26 January 2020.
The zoo admitted that they really did put a piglet inside a tiger’s cage as part of a tiger show. The zoo was warned and orders were given to separate the piglet from the tiger immediately. The piglet was returned to the pig farm inside the zoo. The piglet was not injured by the tiger and the zoo is now prohibited from continuing the show named “Babysitting tiger”. A warning was given stating that the zoo would continue shows involving a piglet and a tiger together their license would be suspended immediately. The zoo understood the warning and has now placed a sign to let tourists know.
Padej stated that this is a serious issue. The Department went to inspect the Sriracha Tiger Zoo and gave a warning to their actions. The show is cruel, affecting those who witness the show and is not appropriate for a zoo to be showing such lack of care for the piglet. The piglet inside the tiger’s cage was moved to the pig farm right away. If the Department discovers that the zoo continues to show such cruelty then their license would be suspended.
Matohay the zoo manager stated that officials visited his zoo after videos were posted online showing a tiger at his zoo playing with a piglet. He understands the warning and the zoo will not be creating any shows like this again in the future. The zoo hopes that people are comfortable knowing that the piglets are now safe.
