THE convenience of ordering food online will help boost the Internet food delivery market in 2017 to a total of 26-27 billion baht with this being 11-15% growth from this year, Thai News Agency quoted Kasikorn Research Center as saying yesterday.
The growth of this business, comprising both websites restaurateurs developed themselves and delivery service, is in contrast to the overall picture of restaurant business in the New Year which is expected to grow by only 2-4% from this year.
Joining an online food delivery service helps restaurants compete better because aside from this link-up expanding their customer base, doing so enables them to get digital customer data which they can use to push their marketing such as when competing against restaurants that develop and operate their own online delivery system.
Even so, in 2017 chain and independent restaurants face different challenges. The expansion of chain restaurants should lead to their customers spreading out to use the service at the new outlets which could lead to the revenue of older restaurants either dropping or growing slowly.
However while independent restaurants mostly open new branches in areas with similar trends, their challenge is in being the first to introduce new dishes to a new market.
