(Matichon) – Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak officially visits Myanmar from today till February 5 with Dawei Special Economic Zone to dominate talks with Myanmar President Htin Kyaw and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
Accompanied with the heads of 20 Thai giant businesses, the aim of his visit which is being made at the invitation of Myanmar government is to strengthen trade, investment and tourism relations between the two countries.
At the Cabinet meeting on January 31, Deputy Premier Somkid said he will be taking the Thai businessmen to meet the two Myanmar leaders who want to focus on Dawei Special Economic Zone while Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha underscored that the Dawei project cannot be scrapped and must bring benefits to both parties.
Many proposals will be tabled during this trip including jointly working out a road map for development such as new communications to boost trade and investment, a special business zone at Mae Sot-Myawaddy border towns, improving human resources, helping small and medium enterprises and boosting digital economy.
Aside from meetings and discussions with Myanmar leaders Aung San Suu Kyi and Htin Kyaw, there will also be full discussions between the Thai Banking Association, Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Industries with top ten Myanmar businessmen and 120 executives of their chambers of commerce and industries.
Two memorandums of understanding will be signed during this trip with one being to develop an emergency department and hospital in Dawei while the other is between the two countries’ fisheries departments.
