Swede loses almost 100,000 baht from Thai bank account

A SWEDISH tourist was shocked to find out that almost 100,000 baht he had deposited in an account at a Thai bank branch in Pattaya disappeared with a balance of only 1.38 baht remaining, Sanook.com reported today (March 2).

At 10 am this morning Mr Henrik Christian Koch, 49, from Sweden, accompanied with his friend Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj Phudit Raktalay, a Special Branch Bureau officer, filed a report at Pattaya police station that on December 29, 2016 he had opened an account at this Thai bank branch in Central Festival shopping mall with 500 baht.

He then added to his savings until it reached almost 100,000 baht and returned to his home country to work for over a year. Upon returning recently he was shocked to find out that all the money had disappeared from his account and only 1.38 baht remained.

Upon being asked the bank staff conducted a thorough check, and found out that a person using mobile number 098-93010XX had enrolled for internet banking to this account. On March 12, 2017 this person first withdrew 90,000 baht and then 9,900 baht leaving only 1.38 baht in the account.

Koch said he asked the bank staff whether their bank would take responsibility for this theft, but they only suggested that he go to the police so that they track down the thief.

Koch’s friend, Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj Phudit said the police have questioned the victim and recorded his statement as evidence and are now contacting mobile phone operators to track down the thief and the gang who helped him steal this money through internet banking link.
