A thief has stolen the 18-carat Gold toilet worth 4.8 Million Pound Sterling from Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England. The British officials were notified in the early morning of 14 September 2019 that the golden toilet on display has disappeared.
Blenheim Palace is a World Heritage Site and also the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. It is considered a monumental house in the countryside. Fun fact is the Blenheim Palace that is officially referred to as a palace that is a non-royal residence. From the appearance, land, and interior, it certainly deserves the title. The Palace was named after the 1704 Battle of Blenheim.
A 66-year-old male suspect has been arrested by the officials with possible connections to the theft. After the Golden Toilet disappeared from the palace, there was flooding in the bathroom from the overflowing water. The Palace and the British Officials are investigating to find other persons involved in the toilet robbery.
The golden toilet was a part of Maurizio Cattelan a contemporary artist’s solo exhibition. He is an Italian Conceptual artist and his last solo exhibition in the UK was 20 years ago. The exhibition takes place from 12 September to 27 October. The golden toilet is open to all visitors, including a 3 minute period where interested individuals can experience the toilet in total privacy. A designated maid comes and cleans the toilet every 18-carat toilet every 15 minutes.
The artist himself has come out and denied that he had anything to do with the theft after rumors started spreading that this might be a Banksy inspired prank style. As he is also known to be a serial prankster in the world of art.
Officials believe that there were 2 vehicles involved in the theft. Police are still at Blenheim Palace to keep an eye out for anything that might raise questions. Maurizio stated “Who’s so stupid to steal a toilet? America was the 1% for the 99%, and I hope it still is. I want to be positive and think the robbery is a kind of Robin Hood-inspired action.” and “I wish it was a prank.” to the New York Times. Even with its centerpiece mission, the exhibition continues accordingly to the planned schedule.
