Villagers want pickled fish factory closed down.

Bangbon villagers in Suphanburi Province are heavily affected by the pickled fish factory that is stinking up the whole village. Pickled fish is an important ingredient used in Thailand for various dishes known as “plara”. It is so smelly, that villagers cannot stand being in their own home and have to leave during the day to run away from the smell. The students in the nearby school cannot focus on learning because of the disturbing smell.

The smell gets even worse when it rains, so bad that the villagers are struggling to live in their own homes. Multiple reports have been filed to the local Damrongdhama Center. Officers decided to go and inspect the factory. An order has been issued for the factory to set up a wastewater treatment system, an air filtration system, and a drainage system that meets the standard.

The factory has been ordering more fish than the registered amount. The factory is running pickling the fish in the village that is also near a school. Villagers have gathered together in the past with an agreement that the factory should have more responsibility in running the business. The owner has promised many times that the factory would improve, but it never reached the standard. The Wat Bangbon Temple School is only 200 meters away from the factory.

Officials from the Suphanburi Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, officers from the Suphanburi Damrongdhama center, the police, and specialists went to inspect the factory. They discovered at least 10 workers preparing fish inside an air-conditioned room.

The owner of the factory sent the son to go instead for the meeting with the officials and the principle of Wat Bangbon School inside the school. The license of the factory has expired since 8 June 2019. The factory is ordered to be closed down until the factory improves it’s facilities accordingly to the agreement with the villagers. Specialists will be sent to inspect the factory to see if it follows the regulations before deciding whether the factory can renew the license. If the factory is caught running again, the district will prosecute the factory.
