Teacher who humiliated student faces transfer

A TEACHER at a Thai school who punished a schoolboy by putting a pair of shoes on his head has been found by an investigation committee to have overreacted and could be transferred, Thai News  Agency said today (August 8).

Adul Kongthong, director of Secondary Education Area 29, said a committee was set up to investigate a teacher at a certain school in Ubol Ratchathani  after she ordered a student to prostrate to another student’s pair of shoes before picking it up and putting it on his head and making him crawl to the schoolroom in front of his friends as a punishment for wearing shoes into the building.

This committee has concluded that the teacher punished the student too severely and not in accordance with official regulations but despite this she did not physically harm the child. For this reason the panel thinks her punishment should either be being placed on probation or having her salary cut.

This teacher was transferred to Secondary Education Area 29  office today and will later be transferred to another school in order to reduce stress among the students, their guardians and for the benefit of the civil service, Mr Adul said, adding he will be soon sending transfer suggestion to Ubol Ratchathani Provincial Education Office to consider.

Thailand’s good teachers network said the best way to resolve this problem is for all educational institutions to use positive discipline when problems arise and for teachers to undergo training in this field.
