S.African man hits and kills schoolboy in Chiang Rai

AN 8-year-old fatherless schoolboy died crossing the road to go buy sweets in northern Chiang Rai province yesterday after being hit by a pickup truck driven by a South African man, Sanook.com reported today (Feb. 7).

Kanitsorn, 8, a grade 1 student, was hit by a pickup truck driven by Mr Mendel Fernado, 52, a South African, with his wife Mrs Chalocha, 49, sitting beside him.

Pol. Lt. Col. Sompot Auesamal, an investigator at Mae Yao police station,  and a forensic doctor from Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital, went to the scene of the accident in Mueang district and found the boy dead on the road and the pickup truck parked nearby.

Mr Watcharin Kaewthantha, the director of Wat Huai Pla Kai orphanage, said the deceased was hill tribe boy whose father had died and who was living with this temple’s abbot.  His mother, Kok Sae Hue, worked as  a cleaner there and the boy was studying at Baan Nam Lad School.

Investigation showed the boy was crossing the road to go  buy sweets from a convenience store on the other side, however he was not watchful enough to spot the vehicle coming down the road and this led to the accident.

The boy’s mother wailed miserably over the dead boy’s body as sadness spread among those who had milled around the accident site. The abbot told the orphanage to arrange a funeral for the boy and help his mother.
