Govt approves ban on plastic bags
The Thai cabinet has agreed to ban single-use plastic bags in shopping malls, supermarkets and convenient stores starting from January 1, 2020, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today (Nov 13, 2019).
Government spokeswoman Traisulee Traisoranakul said the agreement is part of a roadmap to eliminate plastic garbage by 2030.
The ban was earlier approved by the National Environmental Committee (NEC) on Sept 19, 2019. It is expected that the amount of garbage will be reduced by 225,000 tons per year. This will help reduce the state agencies’ expenditure on garbage elimination by 340 million baht per year.
