Villagers report Seafood factory dumping wastewater into community sewer.
Hundreds of villagers gather to report a seafood factory that has been dumping wastewater into the public drains for months. Villagers from the Mueang Kao Sub-district in Khon Kaen Province gather in front of the Sirirat Village to ask for help from related government sectors after a seafood factory has been dumping their wastewater into the community sewer. Thousands of villagers have been affected by the smell and the flies that have gathered in the village. Members of the community were all seen wearing medical masks pointing to the source of the wastewater. The media were informed of a home turned into a seafood factory that has been dumping wastewater, polluting the water in the area. The smelly black water spills out from the drains in the village stinking up homes and some water has even traveled into locals fields.
Anchana Kertsak Nawangnoi 64 years old one of the villagers stated that the problems started in October 2019. The factory is located right in front of Sirirat Village. The owner has changed his home into a seafood factory. Locals don’t know what is used to wash the seafood but all the wastewater is dumped into the public drain. The drain travels throughout the village giving homes in the area a common smell from the sewer. When there is too much water it travels into locals fields, stinking up the area with black water and flies. Many villagers have to wear masks 24/7 because the smell is so bad they’re afraid that it will affect their health.
Dam 70 years old the owner of the factory admits that his factory is the source of the smelly wastewater. His family makes squid and chicken feet products. Main customers are restaurants and stores in Khon Kaen Province. The water used in the factory, mostly coming from water used to wash the squid is dumped directly into the public drain. Dam didn’t realize that the water was causing so much trouble for the villagers.
Dam stated “When I realized the villagers were suffering from the water I stopped washing squid for about 2 weeks now. Instead, I order squid and chicken feet that have already been treated, I then repackage the products before delivering them to the buyers. My daughter has sent a request to build a wastewater treatment tank to the Ministry of Public Health”.
