Chiang Mai airport set to expand

CONSTRCUTION work is expected to begin in 2019 to expand Chiang Mai Airport in response to the growing number of visitors to the northern Thai province, Matichon daily said today (March 2).

The airport has the potential to serve about 8 million passengers a year, but is now handling more than 9.45 million passengers, according to airport director Visoot Jantana.

If everything goes as planned, construction work will begin in 2019, following a public hearing in the middle of March, followed by an EIA study and subsequent cabinet scrutiny, which will take up about two years.

The first phase of expansion aims to serve 18 million passengers in 2030 and 20 million passengers in 2035. The cost of these expansions is expected to be 12,000 million baht.
