Exodus back to Bangkok started last night
AS Songkran holidays draw to an end the exodus back to Bangkok has already started with the heavy traffic flow from the Northeast leading to huge jams in Nakhon Ratchasima province last night while in the South the flow from Yala to Songkhla and the Central region is getting thicker, Thai News Agency said today (April 16).
The good news from Yala is that the campaign to reduce road accidents worked very well with there being no deaths during the Songkran holidays up to yesterday.
It was bustling in Nakhon Ratchasima last night with both Mittraphab and Bypass roads heavily congested particularly in front of Safe One market in the city with the speed reduced to 60 kilometers an hour and in some parts a third lane taken over.
Police and rescue workers have set up assistance points throughout the route to Bangkok to handle accidents and breakdowns. They are fully ready to handle the continuation of heavy traffic all day today.
Traffic also started building up in Yala last night with there being lots of vehicles from Yala central hospital going up the Asian Highway to Bangkok and the Central region with tailbacks at intersections.
However service tents have been set up throughout the route manned by soldiers, traffic police, rescue workers, medical staff and repairmen.
The tough campaign to reduce accidents worked in Yala as statistics from the Center for Road Accident Prevention and Reduction during Songkran show that only nine took place during April 11-15 with these leading to eight men and one woman being injured.
