BMA collects over 500,000 krathongs, drop from last year

AFTER a fun-filled Loy Krathong celebration last night (Nov. 15) Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) workers  have been busy collecting the floats from various waterways including Chao Phraya river, canals, ponds and public parks with this year’s total reaching  514,590, a 19.57 percent drop from last year, TV Channel 7 said.

Collected krathong waste, with the work having started at 8 p.m. and was completed before 5 a.m. this morning, showed that the majority were made of natural materials, totalling 506,320, or 98.39 percent, and 8,270 were made from styrofoam, or 1.61 percent.

Lat Krabang district had the most krathongs, with 20,806 picked up, and Khlong San district the least, with 147 collected.

Last year altogether 639,828 krathong waste was collected, of which 618,951 were made from natural materials and 20,877 styrofoam.

Online krathong floating event, held via website in a virtual atmosphere of all Bangkok’s 34 public parks and along Chao Phraya river at IconSiam attracted 36,832 participants.

However 255,532 people decided to go to one of the 34 parks to float their krathongs the tradition way, with  96,508 collected or a ratio of three to one,
