36% of Bangkok women harassed on public buses
MORE than one-third of Bangkok women using public buses have to cope with sexual harassment in various forms, the Thai-language daily Thai Rath reported today (March 8).
In an interview with the paper, Miss Rungtip Imrungrueng, the policy manager of ActionAid Thailand, said 26 percent of women bus passengers have to cope with daily verbal abuse from male passengers, 18 percent are touched by male passengers, 17 percent are confronted by men displaying their vital organs, and 7 percent say they are shown pornography clips on mobile phone by male passengers.
Miss Rungtrip said Thai women living in urban areas are at risk of sexual harassment. More than 30,000 rape cases were reported each year during 2009-2013. However, only 13 percent of the victims reported the cases to the police.
