4 temples raided in financial fraud case

POLICE raided 4 temples this morning (May 24) and brought senior monks in for questioning over financial fraud, INN News and Sanook.com reported.

The head of Crime Suppression police Pol Maj-Gen Maitree Chimched took over 100 police officers to raid Wat Sam Phraya, Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan, Wat Samphanthawongsaram Worawihan in Bangkok and Wat Or Noi in nearby Nakhom Pathom province.

Brought in for questioning were the Abbot of Wat Sam Phraya and 2 assistant monks of Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan because the abbot was not present.

Meanwhile Phra Buddha Issara of Wat Or Noi was also  brought in for question about a fraud involving temple funds but he was informed of additional charges of robbery and racketeering.

This case stemmed from a search of the house of Mr Wiwut Udomchokpiti in adjacent Nonthaburi province where it was discovered that Wat Sam Phraya land beneath Phra Pinklao bridge had been rented out at 30,000 baht a month but later subleased to a Chinese restaurant operator for 300,000 baht a month with this falling in the money laundering category.
