Nakhon Sawan police rushed to the scene of the accident where a tour coach belonging to Cherdchai Tour Company had lost its balance and first slipped to the side of the road before plunging into the two-meter deep canal near a bridge crossing it at kilometer 37-38 of Nakhon Sawan- Pitsanulok highway (route117) in Banphot Phisai district.
At least 17 passengers were injured with two being in a serious condition and all were taken by rescue workers to a nearby hospital. The remaining passengers were transferred to another coach which took them to their destination.
The driver died after a beam fell on him and pinned him down under the canal water.
Police initially believe the driver might have dosed off but would have to question those injured in detail before coming to a conclusion.
