Chavalit chats with Thaksin
IN his first meeting with the media since the latest coup in Thailand, former prime minister and Army chief Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh today (May 18, 2018) talked about Thailand’s problems and his recent telephone conversation with former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is now in exile.
“Judging from his tone, I think Khun Thaksin wants to return to Thailand,” said Gen Chavalit. “He expressed his loyalty to His Majesty the King and country.”
Asked if a national government should be formed, Gen Chavalit said “No.”
A better way is to form an interim government comprising all key stakeholders to solve long-standing problems. This government may stay for six months or more to bring about reconciliation among contentious groups and parties in the country.
A group of “wise men” – respected people with no political aspirations or affiliations – may be formed to advise the interim government.
