Songkhla heavily flooded as heavy rains lash lower South
TWO Songkhla districts were heavily flooded last evening (Nov. 27) with floodwater flowing into people’s homes in some areas amid a warning by the Meteorological Department that heavy to very heavy rain will continue in the lower South till Saturday Nov. 30, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said.
In Khlong Hoi Khong district floodwater flowed strongly through the key road running between Air Force Wing 56 and Wat Khok Muang temple with road users having to drive carefully because of swift currents.
Officials were out ensuring the safety of road users and it is expected that the floodwater level would drop overnight should it stop raining.
Mr. Worin Thongkhao, Na Thawi district chief, said continuous rain had led to houses in all 10 subdistricts being flooded with floodwater still draining out from some roads.
Worst hit are Na Mo Si, Tha Pradu and Chang subdistricts, particularly the latter where floodwater is over a metre high because this is the zone water flows down to from high ground before draining into Na Thawi canal.
Officials are gearing up to declare this a disaster zone.
The weather bureau said the current wave of heavy to very heavy rain in the lower South was brought on by a rather strong high-pressure system from China covering upper Thailand and South China Sea and a northeasterly monsoon prevailing over the Gulf of Thailand and the South strengthening. Meanwhile, a low-pressure cell over a coastal area of Malaysia is moving into lower Andaman Sea.
Provinces being hit by heavy downpour include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun. People in the aforementioned provinces should be careful as torrential rain could trigger flash floods and forest runoffs, especially at hillsides, near waterways and lowland.
