Hong Kong discovers Heroin worth 275M from Thailand.
Hong Kong officials have discovered a big lot of Heroin worth 275 Million THB sent in from Thailand. The drugs were hidden inside food items including instant noodle packages. The story was published on South China Morning Post. Hong Kong customs reported on 25 July 2021 that the drugs were shipped in by sea. All discoveries total to more than 230 Million HKD or about 7,579 Million THB from 3 discoveries. 5 suspects have been arrested, 4 men and 1 woman connected to the 3 busts. This includes cocaine hidden in health foods, liquid methamphetamine hidden in avocado oil bottles, and heroin hidden in instant noodle packages.
Hong Kong Customs reported the three cases are connected to three different drug trafficking groups in different areas. The investigation continues on whether the groups are connected to each other in any way. The bust took place from 12th to 24th July 2021 and reported to the public on the 25th. The first mission on the 12th happened when officials seized cocaine worth 85 Million HKD or around 360 Million THB. The cocaine was mixed in with healthy foods including chia seeds and ginseng. Hong Kong officials stated that the drug smugglers used a method where the drug must be extracted out of the food it was mixed into. There were a total of 6,800 bottles in which 180 bottles were found with cocaine.
The heroin sent in from Thailand, which is the third case took place on 22 July 2021. The goods were declared to customs as snacks. Inside officials found 61 kilograms of heroin hidden in instant noodle packages. In relation to the case 2 men and 1 woman were arrested connected to the case. This is the biggest heroin discovery in 20 years worth 65 Million HKD or around 275 Million THB. Hong Kong officials reported there has been an increase in drug related investigations in the country during the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, drug smugglers have tried different methods including sending large shipments in at once. But officials have found certain signs of these shipments.
