Wildfire crisis in Trat Province

Thick smoke caused by wildfire entered the southeastern Thai province of Trat for the 5th day  (24 Feb 2020) with people in the municipal and outlying areas continuing to wear face masks to protect their health, the Thai-language daily Khao Sod reported.

Fire-fighters have managed to stop the blaze in Laemklad sub-district but new blazes occurred along the area straddling the Bantad mountain range.

Landmines buried under the area during the past armed conflicts also pose a major obstacle.

“We have to be very careful because we do not know where the landmines are buried,” said a fire-fighter.
