2 drug smugglers shot dead in clash with police
POLICE in northern Chiang Rai province shot dead two drug smugglers during a firefight close to midnight last night and seized over 2 million methamphetamine pills and 65 kgs of crystal methamphetamine (ice), INN News said this morning (August 3).
Pol. Maj. Vuthipong Petchkamnert, head of narctotics police 3, said the clash broke out at 11.50 pm near the bypass at Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province after he and his team acted on a tipoff and laid in wait for the drug smugglers.
When a suspicious vehicle passed by they showed themselves and moved to check it but the two men within opened fire and tried to escape and were shot dead in the clash.
Seized were 13 gunny bags holding 2,122,000 methamphetamine pills and 65 kgs of crystal methamphetamine (ice), two revolvers and other firearms, a sedan plus around 10,000 baht in cash.
Pol. Maj. Vuthipong added that police have not yet been able to identify the two drug smugglers but are certain that the drugs were being taken to inner Central Region. Investigation is now continuing to find the real owner of the illegal drugs so as to arrest him.
