7 still in the hospital after Krabi boat blaze
OFFICIALS from key units teamed up to inspect the wreck of the burnt speed boat in Krabi for clues to yesterday’s fire which left many Chinese tourists injured with 7 victims still in the hospital, Thai News Agency reported this morning (Jan 15).
Mr Surasak Monkolchaisith, transportation officer at the Marine Office Krabi branch, together with forensics and marine police and officials from Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park took divers to check the wreck and collect evidence.
The engine of the speed boat, King Poseidon 959, had exploded in the sea yesterday after catching fire in front of Viking Cave near Phi Phi Island, leaving many of the 26 Chinese tourists on an excursion from Phuket to Phi Phi Island in Krabi injured. Aside from the Chinese tourists, there were 5 Thais mainly the boat crew.
As of this morning 7 of those who were injured still remained in the hospital with the boat’s captain, Mr Kriengkrai Boonsi, 28, being in the ICU at Krabi Hospital.
Meanwhile 2 Chinese tourists are at Krabi Nakarin International Hospital, 2 more at Bangkok Phuket Hospital, 1 at Wachira Phuket Hospital while Mr Prawit Saengviman, 45, is at Phuket Provincial Hospital.
Minister of Sports and Tourism Weerasak Kowsurat immediately flew down to Krabi and and visited the injured.
He said that the 2 tourists at Krabi International Hospital are in critical condition with level 2 burns covering 30-50% of their bodies, and they are closely being taken care of by the doctors.
The boat’s captain was burnt on his face and body and Krabi Hospital doctors have put an oxygen tube through his neck to help him breathe.
